Flexibility : the Future of Work
On June 24, 2008, corporate leaders in flexible work strategies came together for a thought-provoking discussion on making flexibility a reality in today’s workplace. Moderated by our own Sally Thornton, President and Co-founder of Flexperience, the event highlighted ways in which successful businesses are implementing flexible work solutions in order to acquire top talent and retain valued employees.

Panelists discussed how decreasing turnover rates, increasing employee satisfaction and morale, and retaining the most highly skilled workers are among their most critical business challenges. Some of the advice from panelists who have implemented flexible work initiatives included:
- Flexibility is not a “one size fits all” proposition, but has to work within the established culture, values, and business requirements of the company.
- Career development lifecycles are shifting from a linear path, or “career ladder,” to a more sophisticated “corporate lattice.”
- Improved technologies such as PDAs, video-conferencing, and high-speed Internet access that allow employees to work virtually are key components of a successful flexibility program.
- Flexibility initiatives do not need to start from a top-down mandate, but can develop through informal, organic experiments and pilot programs that can be fine-turned before being rolled out company-wide.
